Young filmmakers premiere short films to full house at Broadway

Local filmmakers – aged 16-19 – premiered their debut short films at Broadway, Nottingham on Thursday 29 March in front of a full house of 340.

FASCINATION, SIGNED. and GONE were the three short films produced as part of the BFI Film Academy with Broadway acting as regional delivery partner of the programme for the sixth year.

Participants in the BFI Film Academy had the opportunity to gain valuable advice and guidance from those already working in the UK film industry over five months whilst at the same time creating their own short film.

All those that have taken part over the past six years are from the East Midlands and a number have gone on to work in the industry on films such as SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY, GAME OF THRONES and the upcoming HEART OF CHAOS which includes action scenes shot in Nottingham’s Market Square.

Speakers and mentors on the programme have included Screenwriter and Director Deborah Haywood (Pin Cushion), Editor Richard Graham (Stan Lee’s Lucky Man, The Missing, Monsters: Dark Continent) and Producer Anna Griffin (Only God Forgives)

This is the first year that the premiere event for the resulting short films has played to such a large audience and programme alumni have gone on to receive further mentoring from BAFTA, gained work experience with film companies and gone on to work in the industry

Paul Hough, Creative Learning Manager at Broadway said “Broadway are extremely proud to work with these talented, young filmmakers and will continue to support the development of local talent in the future. We want to inspire creativity and a lifelong love of film, something that our continuing partnership with the BFI enables us to do.”

FASCINATION, SIGNED. and GONE will be available for general viewing shortly.

Broadway will also be delivering an Easter Filmmaking School for 13-15 year olds from Monday 9 April to Friday 13 April. The week-long school will give aspiring talent the opportunity to create a film whilst also learning about scriptwriting, prop making, sound effects design and directing. Places on this course can be booked here http://www.broadway.org.uk/events/film-easter-filmmaking-school

Win a copy of THE NILE HILTON INCIDENT soundtrack from Sony Music

Tarik Saleh’s Cairo-set noir thriller THE NILE HILTON INCIDENT is showing at Broadway from Friday 23 March, and we’ve got a copy of the film’s soundtrack to give away courtesy of Sony Music.

For your chance to win, simply send us the answer to the following question as well as your name and address to competition@broadway.org.uk

The deadline for entry is midnight on Friday 30 March. Good luck!

THE NILE HILTON INCIDENT (15)

In the days leading up to the 2011 Egyptian revolution, ambivalent police detective Noredin is tasked with investigating the murder of a famous club singer in a room at Cairo’s Nile Hilton Hotel. What he initially dismisses as simply a crime of passion becomes something that concerns Egypt’s very power elite, as increasingly disturbing details about the roots and reach of the murder come to light - exposing a grubby world of personal, political and systemic corruption.

“Transplants the dark, cynical heart of film noir to the streets of Cairo.” Variety

Win a copy of Martin Scorsese's THE AGE OF INNOCENCE from The Criterion Collection

Martin Scorsese’s THE AGE OF INNOCENCE is released in the UK today (Monday 19 March) on Blu-Ray and we have a copy to give away to one lucky winner.

Martin Scorsese’s lavish period piece, an achingly beautiful adaptation of the classic novel.

No filmmaker captures the grandeur and energy of New York like MARTIN SCORSESE (Goodfellas). With this sumptuous romance, he meticulously adapted the work of another great New York artist, EDITH WHARTON, bringing to life her tragic novel of the cloistered world of Gilded Age Manhattan. The Age of Innocence tells the story of Newland Archer (My Beautiful Laundrette’s DANIEL DAY-LEWIS), whose engagement to an innocent socialite (Heathers’ WINONA RYDER) binds him to the codes and rituals of his upbringing. But when her cousin (Dangerous Liaisons’ MICHELLE PFEIFFER) arrives in town on a wave of scandal after separating from her husband, she ignites passions in Newland he never knew existed. Swelling with exquisite period detail, this film is an alternately heart-breaking and satirical look at the brutality of old-world America.

DIRECTOR-APPROVED SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES:

· New, restored 4K digital transfer, approved by director Martin Scorsese, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD

· New interviews with Scorsese, co-screenwriter Jay Cocks, production designer Dante Ferretti, and costume designer Gabriella Pescucci

· Innocence and Experience, a 1993 documentary on the making of the film

· PLUS: An essay by critic Geoffrey O’Brien
